Key areas of focus

Music Australia supports and promotes Australian contemporary music and the development of markets and audiences through these key areas of focus.

Share page

Guided by the advice of the Music Australia Council, our research and consultation with the Australian music industry and the National Cultural Policy: Revive, these are our key areas of focus:

1. First Nations arts

To grow the market for contemporary Australian music, it is essential that Music Australia helps to cultivate a strong, independent and self-determined First Nations music industry, which exists alongside and participates within the broader industry.

2. Artist development

Music Australia will invest in organisations to deliver a suite of creative development programs, as well as financial and business literacy accelerator programs, to increase development of original music through investment in artistic creation.

3. Industry development

Music Australia will support industry professionals to learn business and management skills by providing investment for industry-led skills development initiatives, commencing with those that have already been piloted and demonstrated positive results.

4. Market development

Music Australia programs and investments aim to build capacity and increase growth for Australian artists and Australian music in established markets, while also responding to emerging trends and new music markets in Australia, overseas, other mediums and online.

5. Audience development

Music Australia will invest in programs that focus on audience development, as well as supporting the industry to attract and engage target audiences and retain them through strategic, dynamic and sustainable relationships.

6. Music education

Music Australia plans to convene sessions with the music education sector over the coming years to establish strategic direction, form relationships and, where appropriate, develop co-investment models with state and territory Governments on strategic initiatives to support music education outcomes.

7. Research

Music Australia commissions and partners with other organisations on detailed, evidence-based research to define the industry’s place within Australia’s cultural and economic framework and inform and provide much needed benchmarks for its investments and initiatives.

8. Discoverability and promotion

Music Australia will work to promote the visibility and prominence of Australian music content through sector discussions, and by investing in marketing campaigns and partnering with third party initiatives to ensure Australian music wins the hearts and minds of the Australian public.

9. Policy development

Music Australia will provide a platform for industry discussions – to foster connections and share areas of interest that would benefit from aligned advocacy – ensuring that policy recommendations and responses for government are shaped by in-depth consultation with the Australian music industry.

10. Diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA) and environmental social governance (ESG)

Music Australia is committed to the values and benefits that DEIA and ESG bring to the Australian music industry, not just as standalone initiatives but as critical components that help to drive sustainable success.

Our purpose

Our purpose is to support and promote Australian contemporary music and the development of its markets and audiences.

The Australian contemporary music industry is a complex ecosystem. It has experienced substantial disruptions – from new technologies and modes of distribution to shifting audiences. Music Australia has been specifically designed to reach into the commercial sectors, where traditional grants funding models have had limited success.

As a dedicated body within Creative Australia, Music Australia invests in and supports the Australian contemporary music industry, building partnerships and expertise that both directly support Australian artists and benefit Australian audiences.

Guided by Creative Australia’s establishing legislation and the National Cultural Policy: Revive, we are ensuring we do this in an informed and evidence-based way by taking the best advice we can from the Music Australia Council, and through research, data and industry convenings.

Music Australia aims to:

  • grow the market for contemporary Australian music
  • increase development of original music through investment in artistic creation
  • deliver song writing and recording initiatives in schools
  • develop new strategic partnerships within and beyond the music sector, including to undertake research and data collection around key issues, including festivals and venues
  • provide ongoing support for Sounds Australia – Australia’s export music market development initiative
  • support industry professionals to learn business and management skills
  • provide central coordination around access to live music venues for bands and solo artists
  • develop new co-investment agreements with states, territories and industry to deliver national sector-wide priorities, and
  • create Community Music Hubs in high density living areas.

We are taking a targeted and adaptive investment approach, which will scale overtime in line with Music Australia’s budget appropriation. Music Australia will receive $69.4 million over four years. The investment increases year on year, indexed at $28.2m ongoing from 2027-28. For more information see our key areas of focus

Our history

Music Australia was established on 24 August 2023. The Australian Government’s Minister for the Arts, the Hon. Tony Burke, announced the inaugural members of the Music Australia Council on Wednesday 23 August 2023, with their positions taking effect from Thursday 24 August 2023. The Council provides strategic advice and recommendations regarding the priority investment, development, and research needs of the contemporary music industry in Australia.

Adrian Collette AM, CEO of Creative Australia, and chairperson of the Music Australia Council said: ‘I am honoured to be chairing the Music Australia Council, which brings together an incredibly experienced and diverse group of artists and industry professionals, who are acutely aware of the ongoing disruptions and challenges across the industry. They will provide expert advice as we build the Music Australia strategy from supporting grass roots talent to building local and international opportunities.’

On Thursday 19 October 2023, inaugural Director of Music Australia Millie Millgate was announced, and after winding up over 14 years with the music export initiative Sounds Australia, Millie began in the role on Monday 20 November 2023.

In line with the aims of the Australian Government’s National Cultural Policy Revive, Music Australia provides support through a range of initiatives, including investment in projects, professional development, and strategic investment and partnerships.

What counts as Australian contemporary music?

On 22 November 2023, the Music Australia Council endorsed the following working definition of Australian contemporary music:

‘Australian contemporary music is any genre or subgenre of music currently composed, written, produced by Australians and licensed, recorded, presented, and distributed through commercial and non-commercial activity. For the purposes of Music Australia’s initial investments, the focus will be on musical works that are new, original and relevant to contemporary Australia.’

In other words, any Australian citizen or permanent resident currently composing, writing or producing music of any genre (this could be baroque-style balalaika music, as long as you are writing it now!) would fall under the scope of Australian contemporary music.

Research

At Music Australia, we believe credible research is a powerful tool to listen, understand and pro-actively respond to the issues facing the Australian contemporary music industry.

Share page

The Australian music industry has suffered from a pervasive lack of data and research about our sector. We would significantly benefit from a more evidence-based and nuanced understanding of both the needs and opportunities available across the Australian music industry.

Research helps to define the music industry’s place within the country’s cultural and economic framework and inform and influence current debate and decision making, particularly when its outcomes are widely adopted

Thorough and ongoing major research projects will also underpin Music Australia’s work in a wider range of areas and provide much needed benchmarks.

Music Australia has commissioned and is involved in research to survey the views of the Australian public on the music industry (perceptions, belief, values, behaviour and importance), that also includes targeted questions on their participation and consumption habits, to develop evidence-based investment strategies.

Recent and upcoming research projects

  • Soundcheck: Australian music festivals, an analysis of Australian music festivals models and operations, Creative Australia (2024).
  • The Australian Music and Games 2023 Benchmark, conducted by Brendan Keogh (QUT) and Dan Golding (Swinburne University) and published in 2023.
  • Community Music Radio: Building the music-media ecosystem, a 3-year project funded by the Australian Research Council and based at Monash University, conducted in partnership with the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA), Community Broadcasting Foundation (CBF) and APRA AMCOS (staged delivery 2023-2026).
